swag�� Historians Receive National Parks Funding to Collect Women’s Stories

Two University of California, Davis, historians have received funding from the National Park Service to address the educational gap in U.S. women’s history and role in the nation’s national parks. Professors Ellen Hartigan-O’Connor and Lisa Materson will craft 80 biographies of women involved in national parks in the western region of the United States, and, in a longer article, connect those women’s lives to the ongoing struggle for voting rights.

Downy Mildew Research to Benefit Lettuce Growers and Consumers

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, will use the genomics of lettuce to combat a pathogen that causes losses in the $3 billion industry each year.

The Foundation of Food and Agriculture Research, or FFAR, awarded Richard Michelmore, professor and director of the swag�� Genome Center, the first research grant through the Crops of the Future Collaborative.

swag�� will receive $2.5 million from FFAR and matching funds from the Crops of the Future Leafy Greens Participants for a total of $5 million.
