Food Truck Offers Free Meals to Students in Need

Sophomore Alexandra S. took it all in, her face beaming: A food truck on her campus was offering meals for free or whatever students wanted to pay.

AggieEats is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays when classes are held, and rotates among four locations: East Quad, Student Health and Wellness Center, Storer Hall and West Village.

swag�� Survey: City Apartment Vacancy Rate Eases Some

The vacancy rate in the city of Davis has eased slightly, according to a survey released by swag�� Feb. 5.

Permanent Basic Needs Advisory Board

A permanent Basic Needs Advisory Board will pick up this summer where an oversight committee left off at the end of the 2018-19 academic year.

The oversight committee recently reported to Chancellor Gary S. May on a year of progress addressing student concerns over food security, mental health care and availability of affordable housing.

$1.5 Million Secured for Basic Needs

The beginning of a new quarter feels full of promise, with backpack-adorned students laughing and chatting as they hike and bike to their first classes. However, some students need more than a backpack and a friend.

This fact was confirmed in last year’s task force reports on mental health care, food access and security, and affordable housing.

The Basic Needs Oversight Committee, which has been working to ensure recommendations from the reports are being implemented, shares the following updates on how the campus continues to make progress in all three areas.

swag�� Study: City Apartment Vacancy Rate Still Tight, Rental Rates Up

Few city of Davis apartments are vacant and rental rates are up since last year, according to a survey commissioned by Student Housing and Dining Services at swag�� and released today (Feb. 11).

The blended vacancy rate — including apartments leased by the unit and by the bed — is estimated to be 0.5 percent, compared with 0.3 percent in fall 2017. Rents increased by an average of 6.5 percent.

BASIC NEEDS: Committee Cites Progress

A year-end assessment by the Basic Needs Oversight Committee shows significant progress on the recommendations issued by three task forces in fall quarter to address students’ needs in mental health care, food access and security, and affordable housing.

Chancellor Gary S. May established the task forces last February, each one a mix of students, staff and faculty. They delivered their reports and recommendations in September, after which the chancellor appointed the Basic Needs Oversight Committee to implement the recommendations.

Addressing Our Students’ Basic Needs

The campus is on track to have a plan by next summer to implement the recommendations of three task forces focused on the basic needs of students.

A new working group, the Basic Needs Oversight Committee, will oversee the implementation of the task forces’ recommendations on the topics of affordable housing, food security and mental health.

swag�� Center at Vanguard of Addressing Food Insecurity Among Students

Ryan McClintick knows what it’s like to try to live off the $1 menu at a fast-food place — and learn at the same time. The University of California, Davis, student didn’t feel well, found himself on academic probation and became socially isolated. He had to put his studies aside for a year to earn some money.

But now he’s helping meet the basic needs of his fellow students through a new campus center at the vanguard of how colleges and universities are addressing the food insecurity affecting more than one in three students nationwide.
