Campus Serves Up Award-Winning Response to Cook Shortage

Roger Thompson clapped his hands together. “You’ve got two hours to open. Let’s get to it.”

“Yes, Chef!” Andrea Rivera replied. She turned to a class visitor and whispered: “That’s so they know we heard them, and it’s fun too.”

And with that, Rivera and five other food service workers left their classroom space at dining tables in Latitude and headed toward the dining facility’s kitchen on their way to becoming cooks at swag��.

Center for Undocumented Students Gets New Name

AggieEats is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays when classes are held, and rotates among four locations: East Quad, Student Health and Wellness Center, Storer Hall and West Village.

Former Astronaut Tells Youth to ‘Dream Big’

That’s the message José Hernandez, a former astronaut and a member of the UC Board of Regents since last August, shared with about 1,200 students and others who gathered at swag�� for the Cesar Chavez Youth Leadership Conference and Celebration last Saturday (May 14).

In January 2020, Celia Murillo Amezcua started as a conductor for Unitrans’ double-decker buses. And then the pandemic led to remote instruction and bus service reductions. Last May, the senior became the human resources manager for the student-run bus service. And now she is among those challenged to recruit hundreds of students to part-time jobs still vacant three weeks after the start of the fall quarter and return to in-person instruction.

swag�� Chancellor Gary S. May Selects Pablo Reguerín for Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs

University of California, Davis, Chancellor Gary S. May has selected Pablo Guillermo Reguerín to be the next vice chancellor of Student Affairs. Reguerín currently serves as associate vice chancellor of student achievement and equity innovation at UC Santa Cruz, a position he’s held since 2017.

Recruiting for a Permanent VC of Student Affairs

Chancellor Gary S. May has appointed a recruitment advisory committee for the position of vice chancellor of Student Affairs.

Emily Galindo has been filling the role on an interim basis since March 2018 after Adela de la Torre vacated the post to become president of San Diego State University. Galindo, who started at swag�� as an administrative assistant 35 years ago, is featured in the video above.

TRANSITION: Paul Kim Appointed Director of Counseling Services

Paul Kim, who has been supporting student well-being at swag�� for a decade, is the new director of Counseling Services in Student Health and Counseling Services, or SHCS. He had been serving as interim director since July.
