During a web presentation about the Panamanian rainforest, children from a fourth-grade class in New York City asked University of California, Davis, sophomore Brianna Pinto if she’d ever seen the Panama Canal. She turned her laptop camera to her office window to show a cargo ship on the canal.

“All of the kids yelled in awe, expressing exactly how I felt every time I walked outside here,” said the wildlife, fish and conservation biology major.

Journey to Nepal Is Pilot for Seminar Abroad Programs

swag�� Study Abroad’s first journey to the Himalayan region will take place between fall and winter quarters, in a pilot project aimed at giving more students the opportunity for global experiences.

The State Department is awarding the university a $40,000 grant to develop a blueprint for more such faculty-developed programs with intersession travel — Seminars Abroad — which require less time away from campus and have lower costs for students.

French Government Assists swag�� Study Abroad

Vive la France! The French government recently awarded nearly $22,000 in grants to swag�� to promote Study Abroad opportunities in France and provide scholarships to students going there.

The Office of Global Affairs secured a grant of $19,386 from the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Study Abroad Club won a $2,000 grant from the French Mission for Culture and Higher Education, located in New York City.

Veterinary students who did externships abroad this summer came back with more than just new experiences and education. Each student who received an award from the International Summer Externship Travel Fund produced a video detailing the experience. The videos have been posted on the School of Veterinary Medicine website, and an example from Australia can be seen above.

Conference at swag�� to Highlight Best Practices in Internationalizing Campuses

Topics ranging from expanding participation in study abroad to supporting Syrian refugee students and scholars will be discussed at an Institute of International Education conference at the University of California, Davis.

About 180 university faculty and administrators who work in international education and engagement are expected to attend “Lead Your Campus to the Top: Best Practices in Internationalizing the Campus” and pre-conference sessions.
