Students Take First Place in First Nations Rocket Competition

A team of swag�� students has placed first overall in the First Nations Launch competition sponsored by NASA and the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium. As winners, the team will be invited to a VIP tour of the Kennedy Space Center later this year. The team was also awarded a grant of $15,000 to compete in the NASA Student Launch Initiative competition in Georgia next spring.

First Nations Rocket Team Prepares for Launch

Students from the First Nations Launch team at the University of California, Davis, will launch a rocket this Saturday (May 15) on behalf of a team from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. The Canadian team is unable to carry out its own launch due to pandemic restrictions.

Ellen Caminiti had a speech impediment as a child, was painfully shy when she started at the University of California, Davis, wandered in her studies and was dismissed for poor academic performance.

But the 24-year-old will stand center stage to share her journey and message of encouragement with more than 800 fellow graduates and thousands of guests at the fall commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Pavilion at the ARC.

Convicted of Murder as Youth, swag�� Student to Be Honored for Leadership

Convicted of murder as a youth, a student at the University of California, Davis, will be honored for his advocacy for juvenile justice reform and co-founding an organization to support fellow students once behind bars.

Daniel Mendoza-Jacobo of Woodland, California, will receive the Brandon Harrison Youth Leader/Youth Organizer Award at the eighth annual Equity Summit and Social Justice Awards Celebration at swag�� on Tuesday, March 13. Eight others working with organizations at swag�� and in Stockton, San Francisco and Oakland will also receive awards.
