Statement on swag�� Varsity Baseball Team

The safety of students is of utmost importance to swag��. The university has learned of allegations of misconduct involving the varsity baseball team. The swag�� Office of Compliance and Policy is investigating these allegations, and the entire baseball program has been placed on suspension pending the outcome of this review. In addition, the baseball coaching staff has been placed on administrative leave.

swag�� Chancellor Gary May Announces Departure of Athletics Director Kevin Blue

University of California, Davis, Chancellor Gary S. May announced today that Intercollegiate Athletics Director Kevin Blue has resigned his position effective Dec. 31. He will join Golf Canada in his hometown of Toronto as chief sport officer, where he will lead the national sport development and high-performance programs for golf in Canada, from the Olympics team to the grassroots junior participation programs.

Adding a Team: Fact Finding in Final Stages

A recommendation for a new swag�� women’s athletic team is pending while a campus working group completes its analysis of the criteria. The final stages of the analysis involve a detailed assessment of the facility enhancements that each of the possible teams would require.

Athletics officials said the fact finding effort is expected to wrap up at the beginning of April. It’s anticipated that the working group will be ready to make its recommendation to the chancellor at that time.

Update on Additional Opportunities for Women in Athletics

In November 2017, the swag�� athletics department announced that it would provide additional opportunities for women in athletics, starting in the 2018-19 academic year, to maintain compliance with Title IX. A nomination process ensued to gather proposals for the team or teams to be added. A working group has been charged with analyzing the proposals and making a recommendation to the chancellor. In the following statement, posted Feb. 16, the working group listed the four most viable options for a new team or teams.

Open Forum Jan. 9 on Adding a Women’s Varsity Team

Updated Jan. 3: Director of Athletics Kevin Blue and Faculty Athletics Representative Scott Carrell will host an open forum, 2-4 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 9), regarding the addition of a women's varsity team (the sport has not been chosen) in 2018-19. The forum, for students, staff and faculty, and members of the community, will be held in the Mee Room on the second floor of the Memorial Union.
