The California Raptor Center’s fall open house is set for Oct. 23, and, as usual, early birds are welcome for an hourlong Hawk Walk starting at 8.

The open house runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with presentations scheduled for 10 a.m. and noon on raptor biology and ecology.

The Hawk Walk and open house are open to the public — and admission is free (with donations welcome).

The raptor center, a program of the School of Veterinary Medicine, cares for injured raptors (eagles, hawks, vultures and owls), rehabilitating and releasing them back to the wild — provided that they are judged suitable to survive on their own.

Otherwise, the birds go into training to become part of the center’s education program. Open house organizers said visitors will be able to see many of these birds — in display cages and “on the glove,” meaning that caretakers will be handling the birds, out of their cages.

If you are interested in joining the Hawk Walk, you should meet at 8 a.m. at the center’s gate — and bring binoculars.

Directions: Take the swag���� exit from Interstate 80 and turn south on Old Davis Road. Cross the railroad tracks and continue until just before the Putah Creek bridge. Do not cross the bridge; turn left onto the paved levee road. Follow it for two-tenths of a mile and keep on the pavement as the road veers left, taking you down off the levee. Then make a quick right turn into the free parking area.
