swagÍâÁ÷ police this afternoon (March 19) arrested a suspect in two incidents — trespass and theft in the Tercero student housing area — that were the subject of crime alerts sent by mass email Monday and Tuesday.
Police said the suspect, Justin Chiou, 18, was being investigated on a charge of burglary. The investigation is ongoing, police added.
The second crime alert, which went out around 6 p.m. Tuesday (March 18), included two photos from surveillance cameras. The photos spurred tips that helped lead to the arrest, police said.
The first crime alert went out Monday (March 17), saying that an unidentified man trespassed when he entered a room at about 6 a.m. that day. The residents confronted him and he fled, according to the crime alert.
Investigators said they learned later that a key card had been stolen from Potter Hall at about 12:30 a.m. the same day, March 17.
So the , and it included the investigators’ suspicion that the man in the photos had taken the key card, then used it later the same morning to regain entry to Potter Hall, where he then committed the alleged trespass.
Police issued the crime alerts in accordance with the federal government’s Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
